What a fantastic evening on March 31! Many families and friends - more than 200 people - joined the third African Night at DIS and had a wonderful time. Even the temperatures made us feel like being in Africa.
Everybody was impressed by the great performances on stage:
- the Grade 4 students dancing a Rwandan dance which they choreographed after having watched a video message from Mrs Rénes' relatives living in Rwanda
- the Grade 2 & 3 students singing "All you need is love" and "Heal the world" accompanied by Mrs Simon (piano) and Grade 2 student Siljan (violin)
- Grade 4 students and Eduardo Mota making us feel like we are in a rainforest with their djembe music
- K5 students singing an African song
- the theater performance with Secondary School students
- and the amazing DIS Community Choir and the Grade 10 student choir. Great!
The community event took place for the benefit of two initiatives, Bakhita Girls and the Two Wings Primary School in Tanzania, which we have been supporting for several years now.
All guests learned more about our two projects in Tanzania. Paula Zimmermann, former DIS student and co-director of Bakhita Girls, spoke about the planned community center they are going to build. In total they need approx. 10,000 Euro for the construction.
Alexia U., DIS teacher and project coordinator of the Two Wings School initiative, invited Mr. Ombeni, who is from Tanzania and is now studying at the TU Dresden, to talk about the importance of learning English in Tanzania.
Overall we are very happy to inform you that we raised: 2,100 Euro for the benefit of the two projects! We want to thank all visitors who came to the event to support the African projects! A big thank you goes to all students, families and staff members who supported the event before and/or on that night, who performed, who donated their art and who donated food! A special thank you goes to Angela Z., Alexia U. and James G. for being the organizers of the event.
Bakhita Girls, founded by a former DIS student, is supporting young women’s education in Ifakara and is now planning to build a community center for total 10,000 Euro. In the meantime the initiative has become a project of the Dresden organization Akifra e.V. and is now able to reach more people.
