DIS Stands with Ukraine

At Dresden International School we strongly believe in the power of the global community and peace. The war in Ukraine, which we condemn together with the majority of UN countries, is of great concern to us. Our diverse community is home to over 50 different nationalities, including Ukrainians and Russians, and in these difficult times, it is more important than ever for DIS to be united as an open-minded, compassionate, and caring international community. Our hearts go out to the people of Ukraine who are affected by the conflict and stand with the many Russians who oppose this war and seek peace.

As an IB World School, we have a central purpose in delivering the IB mission statement to “develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.” Our commitment now is to support one another and to give back.

Our counselors and teachers are here to assist and support our students and families too. We have lots of resources that we are using in school to respond to student needs at age-appropriate levels. We are committed to ensuring that students learn the news from credible sources and that they are all supported in dealing emotionally with such a difficult situation.

Together with our students and parents, we are planning many initiatives to collect donations in kind and money. If you would like to get involved, there are a few things you can do already.

  • Our Community Network (ComNet) has started a fundraising and donation campaign in a very short time. All items will be transported to Ukraine over the next two weeks. ComNet is collecting and these can be left in the entrance hall at school and preschool campus.
  • On March 4, Grade 9 organized a bake sale where they raised 416,50 Euros which will be donated to the Deutsche Rote Kreuz.
  • Students and teachers are meeting together and planning for action so that we are able to support new Ukrainian families in Dresden.

We will be calling for volunteer parents to support student initiatives over the coming months. If you would like to get involved in student projects, please email helpukraine@dresden-is.de.
