Instructional Model

The Primary Years Programme (PYP) begins at age 3 in our multi-age program for 3- and 5-year-olds, with the classes engaging in four units of inquiry each academic year. Our instructional model is a blend of multi-age and focused instruction:

Multiage Instruction

  • A balance between teacher-directed and child-directed activities
  • Flexible grouping—choosing what is most appropriate for the learning situation and facilitates learning for each child
  • Continuous progress at individual’s pace
        • easier ⇒ more difficult
        • simple ⇒ more complex
        • flexibility in expectations about when and how children acquire certain competencies
  • Meaningful, engaged learning
  • Authentic assessment
  • Professional teamwork

Focused Instruction

Focused instruction allows children to work on skills that are most appropriate to their level of readiness.

  • Handwriting without Tears
  • Math: shapes, numbers, counting, graphing, comparing numbers, creating patterns, etc.
  • Language: letter-sound relationships, alphabet recognition, reading-readiness
  • Unit concepts
  • Transdisciplinary skills
  • Attitudes and learner profile
