Tech @ PYP

At the Dresden International School, we believe that our students need to be taught from an early age to the use of modern technologies. It is important for us that students learn the responsible use of equipment, software and the Internet to learn.

In
Grade 1 we use technology to introduce
  • digital citizenship
  • computer skills
  • file organization
  • and research.
In Grade 2 we use technology to build on skills learned in Grade 1 and expand technology to include file creation,
  • web research skills
  • troubleshooting on the mac and
  • an introduction to video creation and editing.

In Grade 3 we focus our technology use on incorporating it into the Units of Inquiry to support learning. We do this by learning how to do better online research, typing skills are introduced, media becomes more important, students are encouraged to design and create written, audio and video presentations that focus on important topics learned during Units of Inquiry.

In Grade 4, Students receive their Google accounts and are introduced to Google Drive and other Google services. Along with Google Drive, students improve their tech skills by learning how to create animations, presentations, podcasts and narrations that show what they have learned and researched. They also use many browser based learning environments to experiment and develop projects for their Units of Inquiry.

In Grade 5 Students are able to to undertake deep research on the web using big data and are able to sift through that data to design and present very in depth projects. They learn how to design websites, student portfolios and learn basic programming. They learn how to manage their time on and offline while using technology. During their Exhibition, Grade 5 students are required to use many of the technology skills learned in PYP to help choose a topic, research that topic, design and present the topic in written, verbal and video form. Along with the researched topic, students are required to use technology during the Exhibition performance. Performances have included, student made videos created in imovie, sound designed in GarageBand and lighting designed in Photoshop.
